Captain Xog is an attempt at a real-life video game, one which human participants can play, with a reasonabel amount of imagination. The intention of the work was to create the very basics of a game which could be played, freely and for free, anywhere in the world.
The work took the form of a handout sheet, similar to that which might carry the instructions for a board game, which were given away and left in various places around the city for people to take. The sheet briefly explains the intentions, background story and loose instructions for playing the game, which is essentially a variation on a childhood playground game. Ideally, people would pick up the sheet and might choose to play the game with their friends instead of playing a video game, for example. The idea of this work was to offer a critique of simulated reality, both in terms of simulations through technology, such as in 'life simulating' video games and in terms of similar recreations of real life in some relational art.
